Scams - E-mail processing
As I mentioned last month, I had intended to provide general advice on e-mail processing jobs you may see advertised until the Transcribe scam took precedence, but I'm now able to return to the topic.

If you've been looking for home based work recently, you can't have failed to spot ads looking for e-mail processors. The wording of these ads suggests that you are being offered employment but surprise, surprise the reality is somewhat different. In the majority of cases e-mail processing is simply the online version of envelope stuffing - instead of asking for SAEs from people looking for work, and earning a few pence on each enquiry, people reply to your ads by e-mail and are then offered the chance to become e-mail processors - for a registration fee. Of course when you pay your fee you discover the only work is placing identical ads to the one you responded to, and the only e-mail processing is sending out a standard worded e-mail in response to enquiries, earning yourself a cut of the registration fee from each person you scam.

The last few months however, have seen the re-emergence of another e-mail processing advertisement from a business opportunity dating back to 1989, entitled Project 21. Whilst not a scam as such, there are several problems with this package. The first being the misleading advertising which suggests that e-mail processing, ie employment, is on offer. The only e-mail processing is dealing with your own enquiries - once again hardly processing, simply replying to your own e-mails, generated by placing misleading ads. This is simply a sales opportunity and to suggest otherwise casts doubt on the reputation of anyone operating in this way.

If you respond to the ads you discover that the business involves purchasing a 12 part monthly course in a downloadable format for £50 per issue, and then promoting and selling it to others at the same rate. Now this wouldn't be a problem if the modules of the course were worth £50 each, but from the instalment I've seen, it is not worth anything like £50 per issue, rendering the business little more than a money game, rather than a genuine product based business. People are buying it only to sell to others which can only work for the first few people involved - everyone else will be out of pocket by £50 a month, plus promotion costs.

The package was first released in 1989 (ie pre widespread computer use and internet access) when you bought your own copy of a publication then photocopied it and sold it on to others by advertising in local newspapers and by direct mail. Whilst the version I received had been updated, it was still several years old and the first installment refers to updates but without details of how to obtain them. The copy I received was electronic, in Acrobat format, but was still referring to marketing paper products using small ads and direct mail, rather than e-mail.

Nigerian Scams
Last month I mentioned the sudden proliferation of e-mails from Nigeria. I was subsequently contacted by Claire Brooke-Wilson who's found the perfect antidote to these annoying pieces of mail. Check out the following sites if you too are being plagued by "requests for urgent assistance":

and

They made me laugh anyway. Thanks Claire.

2. Featured Publications

Home Business Advertiser
HBA is a monthly A4 publication packed with news, reports, guides, articles from some of the UK's leading specialist writers and just about "everything you need to make your home business a success". A subscription costs just £20 a year and includes a free half page ad, 25% discount on advertising in the magazine, 20% discount on printing services and 25% off print and mail services. (Using their print & mail services I have always had good responses for my own advertising) For a completely free, no-obligation copy, just write to GBA Associates (HBA 048), Freepost (NWW1085A), Liverpool, L38 1BR or e-mail hba@homebusinessadvertiser.gb.com quoting reference HBA 048. Don't forget to include your name and address.

Mystery Shopper UK Guide
Anyone interested in mystery shopping will no doubt have come across ads that proclaim "get paid to shop and eat" but turn out to be directories for US residents only. Well at last a UK mystery shopper has produced an instantly downloadable eBook which explains everything you need to know to get acquainted with the world of mystery shopping including her exclusive contact list of the over 60 companies, individuals and Web addresses you need to start together with a full list of mystery shopper tips, including tax information and assignment handling techniques. Usually £19.95, the guide is currently available for a limited period for just £9.95. To find out more, or purchase a copy, just visit http://www.homeworkinguk.com/mysteryguide.htm. Aimed at new shoppers only.

As with all the downloadable guides I recommend there is a simple money-back guarantee. If you aren't overwhelmed by the freebies you've received by a month after purchasing the Mystery Shopper UK Guide, simply contact them with details and they'll refund you.

3. Featured Business Opportunity

Life Vision
It's that time of year when the sun comes out, skimpy clothes appear and holidays beckon. There's also a fair chance you're desperately trying to lose a few pounds to make the most of it all, so why not combine your desire to lose weight with a new business opportunity from Life Vision? LifeVision has a 3-year track record of unsurpassed success in Ireland and is now open for business here in Mainland Britain as well as Europe and the USA.

I've been hearing very impressive reports from people I know who've tried their BodyShape System, a combination of 3 products designed to help you lose weight and get healthy. You begin your own Lifevision business by becoming a member FREE. You then purchase Lifevision products at wholesale price, sell at retail price and enjoy an immediate income. With retail profits of 25 to 50 percent (up to £35 profit per customer), an extra part-time income of £100, £200, £300 a week isn't an unrealistic aim and because Lifevision products are consumable resulting in repeat monthly sales, you should soon develop a base of regular customers.

You can also introduce other people who wish to earn additional income from home and earn £50 for each active member you recruit as well as commission on their sales, and through further levels of downline. All members can purchase product directly from Lifevision which frees you from time-consuming administration.

For more details of the products visit www.shipdirect.me.uk and for further details of the business opportunity, contact Alan Hill. Independent LifeVision Distributor. I.D. No: 4145 Tel. / Fax: 01650 531522. E-Mail: alan@thermalribbon.fsnet.co.uk

4. Featured Resource

If you've fancied the idea of a website of your own and need something more professional than a free site but thought you can't afford professional web hosting then subscriber Derek Chambers has a great offer for you. To celebrate the launch of his latest business service, www.1stchoicewebhost.co.uk he has prepared a special offer to our readers (not featured on the site) for a limited time of 5mb of webspace with 2gb of data transfer, 3 e-mail accounts and 3 autoresponders for just £10 per year. If you need more space, packages range from 30mb web space with 2gb of transfer rate, 3 email accounts and 3 autoresponders for just £35 per year or £4 Per Month, to 100mb of webspace with 6gb of data transfer, unlimited email accounts, unlimited forwarders, unlimited sub domains and much, much more for just £85 per year or £8 Per Month. (And if you don't understand any of this, the basic package is probably enough)

Included with ALL their hosting packages are free Shopping Carts with many advanced features and free Web Site Design Systems. Many other hosting companies charge for these. They also offer free start up advice and on going support. Other advanced features provided with 1stchoicewebhost.co.uk free include:

  • File Manger - The file manager enables you to handle your site through HTML rather than FTP or other third party applications (although FTP can still be used).
  • Customised Error Pages - 404 Error pages are served to Internet users when they enter an incorrect URL or are not authorised to access that part of the site. These can be customised
  • Search Engine Submission - Submit your site to the major search engines with just one click
  • SMTP Access - Unlike some other hosts SMTP allows you to send email through their servers rather than go through your ISP.
  • Web Mail - Read your email online. Ideal if you go away on holiday or on business trips as you can still access your email online
  • Pop3 accounts - Receive email to any address at your domain which can either be stored in a POP3 mail box on their server until you read it with Outlook Express or other e-mail program, or forwarded to another account elsewhere

1stChoiceWebHost servers are set up so they generate revenue and still run at peak performance. Unlike some other webhosts who have been known to pack their servers at the expense of performance, they concentrate more on maintaining performance and less on maximising the revenue per server.

For more details visit www.1stchoicewebhost.co.uk or e-mail Derek on sales@1stchoicepromotions.com
